Once you have passed both parts of the theory test and shown that you have the aptitude and ability to undertake the final part of the driving test, you will be ready to apply for the practical test.

In order to achieve a successful first time pass, it is important that you have had sufficient tuition and practice. This should ensure you are well prepared and be more than capable of displaying the standard expected by your examiner.

The test lasts approximately 40 minutes during which your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

The driving part of the test usually lasts for about 30-35 minutes on different types of local roads. During this part of the test you will be asked to perform two manoeuvres from the following options. In addition you may be asked to perform a controlled stop as if in an emergency.

You can apply either by post, by phone or online, details can be found on the Direct Gov  website by clicking here.
